Old graphics card is getting very hot?

Very old graphics card (GeForce 8800 GTS) and after 1-2 hours playing Minecraft it will be very hot so hot that I will burn myself when I touch it but I have not yet measured exactly how hot it is. My PC is well ventilated, I have a large fan-like fan at the front that blows in and 2 fans that blow out at the back, and I'm honestly a little afraid that something will happen to the card. Is that normal?

wa

The thermal paste has probably dried out and is slowly crumbling out

Ha

So if it gets hot even at a graphically 20 year old game like minecraft, I would really think if it doesn't even create this grotty ugly pixel graphic, it seems to be really broken or shortly before and I would exchange it.

wa

The part is from 2007 xD

Br

That you burn yourself is normal, a normal temperature is 70 ° C, even 90 ° C is not extremely problematic.

Would actually go out if it's too hot. Otherwise you can check the temperature with the Hwmonitor (https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html).

Mi

Load up the MSI Afterburner. Temperatures around 80-85 degrees are quite normal, and it only becomes critical from 95-100 degrees.

Can you possibly clean the fan of the GTS 8800? I think they had 1-slot design back then where you can't get to the cooling fins, right?

Mi

PS: You can replace the graphics card with a used GTX 750 Ti, this is approx. 3x faster and only needs 30% power. 😂

Co

Oh dear, memories come up. But had the GTX 8800. Was the graphics monster bad? You can hardly believe that today.

Co

The problem here is your information. With very hot, you can't do anything. E.g. With the old GTX 580, a temperature under load of 90 degrees was completely normal. Modern cards are slowly starting to slow down.

Do as "GandalfAwa" says, download and install the MSI Afterburner program. The "RivaTuner" tool is integrated in the program. And with that you can display all important information, including temperatures, while playing. This information is important. Only in this way could I tell you whether everything is still in the green or not.

Ei

The graphics card is older than the Fortnite kiddies xD these days

Ei

Yes, then I would also have to exchange the entire mainboard

Mi

Really? Why shouldn't a GTX 750 fit in? It's actually smaller than the GT 8800 …

Or do you only have space for 1-slot design?

Mi

The jump from the GTX 7800 series to the GTX 8800 series was extremely high, I don't know if there has ever been such a big improvement in a new series.

The trick was that just 128 of these stream processors (CUDA) were installed, which took all the computing work off the main GPU.

The GTX 7800 had only 16 of them.

The RTX 2060 now has 1920 https://gist.github.com/cavinsmith/ed92fee35d44ef91e09eaa8775e3284e… 😂

Mi

Yes, that's right. My first gaming graphics card was a Voodoo 1, which was 10 years before the 6600 GT.

I have to confess that I was still at home in the console sky. But sometimes I paddled with friends on a C64. The first console I had was an Atari 2600. The best thing is that I only had to solder something recently and now the old thing is running again. But already blatant, like the graphics, or how to say it, was once in the beginning.

Mi

Haha, and C64 / Atari was way ahead of my time.

Co

But the incredible thing is that it is still running. I strongly doubt that a PS4 will still work in 35 years. Nowadays they are built in such a way that this is not the case.

Mi

Yes, unfortunately you are right, I find it terrible that the devices are all built so that they are defective after x years.

The world is already overpopulated anyway, resources are scarce and every electrical part is garbage after x years… Humanity is doing its best to accelerate its own downfall as much as possible… 😢

There's nothing more to say. But the throw-away society certainly didn't become one voluntarily. It's just the greed of a few who can't get enough. They have lost faith in everything and are dead. It is only important that there are always people who still recognize this. Unfortunately, very many see the forest, no longer because of the trees.

Mi

Yes, that's exactly how I see it… 😊 … Nice but for everyone who tries not to waste resources. 💖
