After a long back and forth I decided to build a server.
The server is to be used both as a "media storage" and as a game and team peak server3.
Although I'm somewhat familiar with the topic, I still have a few questions.
Mainboard? (24/7)
Should I buy a "server mainboard" or is a normal one enough?
Of course it would be nice if the part were small and cheap, i.e. Micro ATX or even ITX.
Do 4 instead of 2 RAM slots bring me any relevant advantage?
SATA connections are irrelevant here because I want to use an external storage medium.
CPU
This raises the question of AMD or Intel (1151 / XEON / …)
just have to be able to calculate quickly, but should not be too expensive.
R.A.M.
Is 16GB enough for such a project or should I go straight to 32 / 64GB?
Which brands are suitable for long-term use (24/7).
GPU
I don't need it as long as the mainboard has a video connection.
PSU
It should be designed for permanent use.
Is there even a passively cooled solution?
CPU cooling
Passive would be the most beautiful, but does not have to be, the main thing is quiet and constant.
hard drives
Here I would put on an NVMe M.2 SSD, around 200-500 GB.
I don't care about the case, probably a used one…
What do you say Did I forgot something? What would you recommend and where can you get the cheapest components (possibly used)?
The games that should run would be titles like Minecraft, CSGO, Arma 3.
The media logically pictures and videos, possibly a few documents.
Linux would probably be the best option, but since I have little or no experience with it, I would use Windows.
The whole system should run around the clock and of course also be accessible from "outside".
If you have any other tips or even have a server in the basement, always happy.
As a media store / teamspeak server, I would try to buy an older used server. Or share a new pc with cheap ryzen, 16gb ram should do the trick. If the data is very important to you, you can also use ecc ram at ryzen, even if it is not officially supported. But my no.1 recommendation would be an old xeon server.
Media storage is probably a good idea in-house, voice server rather less and I wouldn't host a game server at home.
Such a game server needs a lot of bandwidth, e.g. If Others in the house / building use your connection, there may be complaints.
Of course, it depends on the game and the amount of connections (i.e. Users).
I would rather buy a cheaper NAS server and then host the voice and game server at a provider, because you can get away much cheaper, your users have no connection problems and if your server is attacked you don't have to worry about it + your home network is still working.
PS: If you still want to host everything on one device, then you should set up a good virtualization solution or container system.
I still have an old, fully equipped Dell Poweredge 2950 in the basement, which I no longer need because my R610 (also from Dell) is much better…
you can have it at the material price if you want…
https://www.dell.com/...t_Quad.pdf
I have 2 Quad Core Xeons in it with close 3 GHz, what exactly is in there, I can tell you tomorrow… And 32 GB Ram… Hard drives (SAS) are also in, what size → Tomorrow, if you are interested
otherwise it should be said that such a server in idle with approx. 200 W costs around 50 euro electricity per month and if you only start one service on it, it is too expensive, you can then rent it…
with several services, this pays off more… Nevertheless, the electricity costs remain…
Unfortunately, you did not reveal your internet connection, because it is also important if you want to let several people play…
Thank you for the answer, I had totally forgotten about the current.
Is of course not irrelevant…
Still, I find the offer interesting, what would you like to have for the server and where do you live (of course not necessarily, just to delimit it a little)?
In theory, you can start up or shut down the server remotely if you don't need it for a few days.
The internet connection is such a thing. I'm currently at a meager 33 and down around 5. It's not exactly the world, but it is enough for 2 people, whereby we wanted to expand to 500 and about 50 up in the near future anyway.
As I said, if the offer is still available, I would appreciate more details.
Best wishes
I sent you a PN
Unfortunately I can't answer you via PM, so I'll do it here.
After a little thought, it won't work.
For that, I simply underestimated the power consumption.
Thank you very much for your offer and your effort, but I will continue to look around.
Klaro, no problem…
a Raspi could take over TeamSpeak and media storage…
for games it is cheapest, you rent - at G-Portal, because there a slot costs around 90 cents and you can host any games with your slots…
The Raspi is a good idea, I have one lying around in the basement that I have completely forgotten.
Hosting… Yes, that's right.
But having the hardware in front of you is just a different feeling.
