I was just on a Minecraft server told me that it would be possible to send a virus by image file. I already knew that before, but what about a "skin" file? What if I upload a virus as a skin file? Exactly the same thing I ask myself at whatsapp. What happens if I send someone an infected picture? The skins as well as the picture at WhatsApp are downloaded directly, right?

You can attach a virus to any file.
With WhatsApp this will probably work rather less, they have definite such filters, etc.
A skin file is just a picture.
As far as I know someone has ever done something similar. But it was quite a long time ago and the "victim" had to do the picture himself
