Minecraft Steve - Beard or Smiling Mouth?

To me it looks like a smiling mouth.

That's his beard. There was also a version without.

Not gave, but gives. The current official Steve skin is without. Only Mojang prefers to use the old skin on their covers, presumably because he smiles so nicely.
