Build a second villager nearby (e.g. As if it had a marketplace). Make sure that this is fixed and build a funnel with a box underneath in front of him at waist height.
Villagers like to throw themselves food to adjust their inventory and to be able to mate. The thrown items are then simply swallowed by the funnel and your farmer goes back to farm because the built-in villager has not yet had enough
