Minecraft: villagers don't talk to me?

I just started minecraft again after a long time and found a village. When I click on the villagers don't act with me, just shake my head.

You must now hold items of value in your hand.

This means that the resident has no job. It's best to put a stonemason or something in his house and he'll get this job.

Villagers now have professions and sales based on these different goods.
If a villager has no job, he can't act.
