A friend and I wanted to buy Minecraft for the Switch, but we're both absolutely lost when it comes to Minecraft. How can you play together in the Bedrock Edition Online and is it free or does it cost something?
Only with split screen.

Yes, it can be done via a server. For that you both need an Xbox Live account.
That's fine. You both have to be linked to a Nintendo and Microsoft account. There's also the paid Nintendo Online subscription for 20 euro per year.
