Make Minecraft paintings yourself?

So you can make your own paintings or somehow color cards and then put them in object frames? I don't just want a sign or a banner, but 1 × 1 × 1 painting with a letter on it.

That works with imagetomaps. Just google it.

You can make a little map and build these paintings somewhere far from home (or in the end). As far as I know, that's the only way without mods and commands.
