An HPB gives +2 strength and +2 damage to weapons. There's + 4HP and +2 Defense on one piece of armor.
You can put a maximum of 10 books on one piece of armor or a weapon. You do that on an anvil and it doesn't cost any levels. You also can't accidentally pack on it, the game doesn't allow it.
