Minecraft villagers gone? - 1

I rebuilt a village in minecraft because it was abandoned. I had successfully settled 6 residents with jobs, iron golem and beds. Now I was a little further away to collect items and when I came back there was only one resident. I play on the PS4.

How did this happen and how can I prevent it?

Could the villagers have died? I always lock them up in their homes with me…

Thank you but I don't think so, at least when I was there they always went straight to their houses at night and the golem was there too. Since I have many more houses than residents, there was certainly no problem with space.

Maybe also a raid… Better to build in the villagers when you go away.
