Which Minecraft Forge version?

My question is why are there so many minecraft forge versions of one version? Because for some versions, e.g. Forge 1.12.2 (so I always use the recommended version), the mods do not work. Then it says: "You need the Version 8.0.0 or above" But then I can't find the version of the mod online. So my question would also be, which version is the one that works with the mod? Is there any way to find out?
