Can you protect villagers from despawning?

I'm currently playing Minecraft on the Ps4 and want to build a small village for myself. B with nametags or something?

So actually they don't despawn, I thought. If this is the case, just give a nametag if you can.

If so, then that is a bug in the game, and then no nametag will help either.
