Is a used server worthwhile?

Since I have not found a suitable answer at Aunt Google, I put it here.

I would like to buy a server. I don't mean these new expensive things, but these old towers (e.g. HP Proliant or Dell Power Edge) servers. Since these have Xeon CPUs, I wanted to ask if it is worthwhile to put such a Sing home. The volume doesn't really matter to me at first, only the power consumption worries me. I would use it for the following:

For crafting

Backup server (hard drives not required are disconnected)

Minecraft Server + modded (2-4 players maximum 6)

Maybe (but unlikely), if enough storage, I would use it as a NAS.

So is it worth buying a used Ebay? Or do they use too much electricity? My budget is 140 euro.

Fl

You would have to name the CPU. Then you could compare it with alternatives and pay attention to efficiency, purchase price, etc.

It may be more worth renting a server, namely if you give up the projects in 2 months.

I would hate to rent a server…

Mi

Sure, you can do that if you want to set everything up yourself. 😊

Alternatively, you could get an https://www.netcup.de/vserver/… or at Host Europe… I think that is easier and ultimately even cheaper. 😊

Sa

Thank you for your answer. Server rental could be difficult because I'm a student.

Ge

Renting would be cheaper… Alternatively, you can set up any computer as a server. For example your PC or your laptop! Run the server software in the background - done!

Mi

Hmm, you don't have your own bank account or PayPal account yet? Maybe your parents will do it for you… But no matter… If you want to try it out yourself, a physical computer might even be better than a virtual one. 😊

Your server must run continuously, however, that is electricity of 200-300 EUR per year, so more than the vServer costs if necessary…

ma

What do you think? They don't consume that much, maybe a little more than a standard pc. This is not an electric stove. Yes 1400 Eur, my god, does it exist for it? Von dell or HP too, that will be a very old dog, my friend. I think you may be dreaming a little, but that is allowed after all. I would be happy if you succeed!

Sa

Nope, don't have a PayPal account. The electricity is really expensive… I mean renting is maybe not a bad idea, I was just hoping to put one at home myself (where I can tinker, exchange hardware etc.)

Sa

Thank you for your answer. I have already thought about buying that with the "normal" PC and then using it as a server. I find memory a bit expensive…

Mi

Yes, tinkering is of course also a very exciting project. Only with such an ancient mill that might not be much fun, I would therefore look at a used mini-server, which maybe only max. Needs 50 watts. Would be great if a small SSD were in it, otherwise you always have eternal charging times…

Do you actually need Windows Server 2019 or is a free Linux enough?

Sa

I always read that these old servers use more power. Yes for little money you can get old but good servers on Ebay. Or am I wrong?

Sa

I think a free Linux would do. Maybe CentOS or Ubuntu Server. Why can't you actually take Windows 10? The difference is actually just the optimization. Or did I miss something?

Mi

Sure, you can use any Win 10 computer as a server, you just may not have the services you need.

But to share a network drive, that's easy with Win 10. And Minecraft Server can also be installed on Win 10.

The best thing to do is research what you want to do, whether this can also be done on Win 10.

What would not work is e.g. To install an Exchange Server on Win 10 … 😀

ma

Yes, more electricity, but no worlds, you don't have to build a power plant or something:-)

I'll check it out and find something for you if I find it…

Sa

I pay attention because my parents pay for electricity…

ma

Yes it looks good, with small sas plates there are quick things…

Hardware raid is the best, but not a raid 5, because you need at least 3 disks

And you see 750W power supply, 2 pieces, but one is reserve, so that much power is not!

Your magpies can put the big money back in:-)

Sa

I think an Exchange Server is not necessary. But otherwise everything should go. Let's see if I actually use such a large server or a small one. Maybe a normal pc too. But thanks for your help! You helped me a lot!

Sa

I'll see how the price develops… It's just a shame that it doesn't have a dual socket.

Sa

Thanks for looking out:-)

ma

Yes, you do not need faster xeon there are any amount and boards with 2 sockets also, they are not in great demand.

you can check under finished offers what the costs at the end.

you can do this via advanced search.

Yes, you are welcome, you can write to me if anything is, ear nice with you ciao!

Sa

I will have a look.

Mi

It's a pleasure! And have fun! 😊

So, let's say you buy a Dell Poweredge 2950 … I happen to have one like that…

it needs about 200 W (measured) …

200 W x 24 = 4.8 Kwh a day…

4.8 x 365 = 1752 kwh per year…

at a price of around 28 cents, that's around 490 euro a year…

So around 41 euro per month - only electricity…

for 46 euro you can also rent a dedicated server from Hetzner.de and do not need any hardware for it…

https://www.hetzner.de/dedicated-rootserver/ex42-nvme

but if you need more power now, of course, the power consumption and thus the monthly price increases…

if you want to run more than one service on this server, it can be worth it…

I would first set up a VM as a test, with Virtual Box it's very easy…

if you have any questions, please ask again…

Sa

All right okay thanks!
