How exactly can you host your own server (and is it legal?)?
So could I just order server hardware on the Internet and then host my Minecraft server on it? Is it legal? I'm an absolute newcomer and I'm just interested in it.

You don't even need server hardware for this. It's easy on your computer.
And of course that's legal. Only if you open ports, you have to discuss this with your network administrator.
