Which Minecraft monster is this?

It attacked me at night and I could rarely (and if only then briefly) see it. It was gone very quickly, so quickly that I had no opportunity to attack it. The monster chased me a long way (lake and mountains). When I got to my house I could hear it all the time, but I couldn't see it anywhere. The sounds it made didn't seem familiar to me. It died very early in the morning.

Does anyone know what monster it is? I'm not very familiar with Minecraft.

Was it purple and did it have purple eyes? Then it was n Enderman. Can release his focus from you when you go into the water. Don't look the thing in the eye, you provoke it as if you were attacking it
