Minecraft with a friend does not work why?

I wanted to ask wrm I see the world of my friend on my ios and can click on it but then there's no connection to the world I can play with anyone on the singleplayer outside my house Generel knows it one and can then enlighten me please.

Do you have a good internet connection on the way? Or do you play on the home network? If you two are in the same wlan you can play together, for everything else you need a real server.
