I saw a video on how to play through Minecraft (which I didn't know yet). I built a Nether Portal and spawned right in front of a fortress. I now have 64 Lohen rods what should I do now in the video he did not say how to proceed.

Farm end pearls or buy them from villagers. 14-16 pieces.
And then craft end eyes, throw one with a right click (in the Overworld), walk 1300 blocks in the direction, then throw another one until it leads you down to the portal. And then you can use it in the portal.
