Which Minecraft version is better now if you want to build and play with friends? Which is more popular?
Definitely the Java version. You will also find most of the servers there.
Edit: For PC.
I find that in the Java version it is much easier to install resource packs and mods, there are even whole mod packs for the Java version that make the game something almost completely different. This is not so easy in the Bedrock version. I personally only played a free trial lesson of the Pocket Edition, but it was enough for me to know that I like the Java version better.

If you can play the edition, this is definitely the best choice. You have most (and best) servers and resource pack / modding support is huge.
The only advantage of the Bedrock edition is that you can play with all other Bedrock players because cross-platform gaming is supported.
