I'm playing in Minecraft java 1.1.2_01, and would like to know how to enter a seed
To get to the user interface of the seed selection, select on the tab "Worlds" in the initial menu "Create new" and then "Create new world". There's an arrow button next to the "Seed" input field: Clicking this button opens the seed selection. In the seed selector, a search box will appear at the top with a scrollable area with named thumbnails for browsing the preset seeds. Clicking on a thumbnail takes you back to the Create New World page, where the appropriate starting value is entered.

You can't enter a seed in Alpha 1.1.2_01.
It's something completely different, and not in the version I'm playing with.
I thought you mean 1.12.1 …
That changes everything, of course, but this solution is not ideal.
You have to create a world, and as few chuncks as possible. When you have done that you have to close Mienecraft and go to the world folder and search for the world (World1 …) in the folder delete everything except "level.dat". When you have done that you have to open "level.dat" with an NBT editor of your choice and there you can enter your desired seed (important it is an int value, which only means to pay) So if you want to use a word you have to resort to String.hashcode ().
