Playing for two in Minecraft?

My friend and I want to build a map for two in Minecraft. Is that possible and if so how is it free?

Ps.: We're not on the same network and we both play on the PC!

May not be the easiest solution, but you could register at aternos.org and use a (free) server:-)

The servers are all unusable

Simply install a localhost server

Then open the port: 25565 (for the router)

Install No-IP and add a domain to you.

And then start the server and send your friend's domain
