Minecraft Pocket Edition on Java?

Yesterday I accidentally didn't want the Java Edition but the Pocket Edition. And since my friends only have the Java Edition, could I still play zsm with them? Or do I have to buy the Java Edition now? LG

Java can only communicate with Java.

The Pocket falls under "Bedrock Edition" and is playable with all other Bedrock versions (PS4, XBox, Win10, etc…).
