Mobs that no longer exist. Zombies and skeletons are mobs that were still alive then, but died for some reason and are now walking around as the undead. Teleportation from endermen appears to be arbitrary. I don't know what "the truth" is, but it does happen that endermen walk in one direction and teleport in the other as if they were being bent back. With that in mind, I don't think endermen can choose where to go.
