Score in Minecraft?

I've been playing Minecraft for a few years now and have often wondered what the score actually is and how it is calculated. What is meant is the display when the player dies. Then appears under the death message: Score: x

I think that has to do with xp so how much xp you had can also be something else

The score is the number of XP the player has accumulated since their last death. (Not how much he had when he died, but how much he got by then).
