Maximum height Minecraft?

For my roller coaster, I want to know how high I can build.

At approx. 255.

The clouds are at 127.

But I would build up to a maximum of 140 (above the clouds), otherwise it looks unrealistic.

As ericthecraft has already said, the height is capped at 255.

This is only partially true, because from the next Minecraft version the maximum height will be 384 blocks.
