Minecraft farmers do not want to grow anything?

So I built a farm in Minecraft and I read somewhere that if you sit down there farmers and a bed and a composter that then automatically plants things. So now I have put there beds and composters and the villagers have all the profession Bauer, but somehow they do not do anything, they just run around aimlessly and stare at the composter from time to time. So what do I have to do to start working?

It's been years since I've played this, but maybe you still need a box to pack seed or something?
