Minecraft field doesn't want to grow and color?

I played minecraft yesterday with my cousin and played a survival world. I wanted to build a field there, I also built in enough water and I also have a lot of light, but it didn't want to change color or grow. In other worlds it works right away the fields that grow quickly and color after 2 minutes but in this world, as I said, it did not want to color or let it grow. Could someone help me?
