I built an xp farm in the Minecraft Java Edition and tried to kill the monsters with a piston, but they didn't drop an xp. What should I do?

Kill by hand. Monsters that are not killed by hand do not drop XP

You only get xp if you kill mobs with your hand or yourself, so of course you can also use swords
