Minecraft: tame horse disappeared?

Also. I have in Minecraft (latest version) tamed a horse, equipped saddle and armor. I forgot to build a fence and just let the horse walk around with the other horses, now I wanted to look after the horse and it seems. Path? Can it despaw so suddenly, or did it just go a long way?

Either it ran away or it disappeared where you tamed it. That's a bug I sometimes had.
