Minecraft horse disappeared?

I just visited a total of 3 different villages in Minecraft with my horse (one is in the desert). I spent the night there once and at the last village I took a horse with me (with a leash). When I was home and sat down, did the horse and saddle just disappear?

I don't care about the horse, but I'm pretty much at the beginning and the saddle was lucky.

Where is the horse or why is it gone and can I get it again?
