There are citizens and sentry as plugins. Must see from any version the name has changed to sentry

For the 1.8 upwards you would use Citizens and Sentinel. Sentinel is the extension that tells the NPCs to fight mobs (or players). Here are some examples and a deeper explanation of the possible targets below https://github.com/...npc-setups
