My son has been playing this Minecraft a lot lately. He told me it was almost like an economic simulator. The mode he plays is called Hypixel Skyblock. I was surprised how he explained the complicated subject of the economy to me using a computer game, but I doubt that it is so good and educational for him. Am I right?

Hypixel is a server network on which her son plays, where there's a game mode called Skyblock, what exactly it is about I do not know but Minecraft is not a game where you as a father of a child do not have to worry. And it is instructive, it promotes creativity. In theory, they could allow their son to play "worse" games. Video games can't be harmful unless addiction develops.

Basically, it is important to distinguish a few terms.

Minecraft. Is a game played by millions of people. The age range here ranges from 10 years to over 30 years. In this game, blocks are dismantled and set again, changing landscapes. In addition, you have to survive by planting wheat or breeding animals. So it is a mixture of a 3D modeling program and an economic simulator. Advantage: unfolding creativity. Disadvantage: risk of addiction.

Minecraft server. People soon noticed that it was more fun to trade and trade resources with each other in this online game as well as to chat and to fight with each other now and then.

Minecraft mods and plugins. The game allows you to make changes to the game and to expand or modify the game. Java knowledge is required for this. Some Minecraft servers use these mods to make the game even more interesting or to offer mini games (copies of other games in Minecraft). This has resulted in Minecraft servers that have their own economic system and currencies, for example coins or (fake!) Dollars. This play money can't be converted into real currency.

Hypixel and Skyblock. This is one of the largest, if not the largest, servers in the world. English is spoken primarily on this server. The server has in-game currencies and trading and offers countless different mini-games and changes to the normal minecraft. Skyblock is one of those many changes to the original game. As the name suggests, there are only a few "Blocks" in the "Sky" - Skyblock for short. So players are more at risk of falling somewhere and have to produce raw materials in order to be able to move well.

My Opinion: Minecraft is a unique and great game, but has great addictive potential. Due to the server's own economic system, the social interaction online, but also the almost unlimited possibilities in this game, a certain addiction can quickly arise, which leads to the player spending an abnormal amount of time in the game. It can also be negative that things can get a bit harsher in Hypixel's chat and that the number of special items and items for sale is very high. For a child, I would recommend other, smaller servers that also offer the game mode "Skyblock". However, I would not completely ban it, since Minecraft also offers some advantages.

I wouldn't really call Minecraft Skyblock an economic simulator just because you have few blocks and resources. I might recommend installing a couple of educational mods. You can easily find on YouTube how to install them.

With the technology mods, for example, you can sometimes build huge machines. The range from casting metals to building nuclear power plants or even flying a rocket to the moon. But in order for the electricity to really work, you first have to ponder what you need for what.

Generally there are not only technical mods. You can certainly introduce your son to her son in Minecraft. Especially if it is something technical or manual. In Minecraft there's (but unfortunately I still only think for schools) an Education Edition, where you can learn to understand the periodic table.

He says it is a server on which you can't install mods. The auction house is said to create its own economy.
