Minecraft Bedrock add friend?

I tried to add a friend who can see my worlds (no server!).

I proceeded as follows: I went to "Friends" in the menu → "Add friend" → Entered gamertag → "Good friend" selected → pressed esc → returned to the "Friends" tab.

And he is not to be seen under "Friends", although I have repeated the described procedure over and over again.

What am I doing wrong or are there any steps missing?

P.S. Let me remind you again: it's Bedrock and I don't want to create a server.

You don't actually need a subscription, if your friend accepts the request you should see that when he is online. If not, try the same WLA. If he plays Java then you can't play together. Hope I could help you
