OK, so in my experience X-Ray…
It's fun 🤣 so I usually dig myself straight down, but not on one block but 2, so that you stand on one while you dismantle the other. When you are at level 11, build a small room from which you dig straight in each direction (2 blocks high). From these corridors you always dig into the wall on the upper block (as far as you can if you stay in the tunnel). I always do it with 3 blocks between the tunnels, most say 2 is more effective. Using this tactic, I found most of the slides, but a lot of youtube videos explain good tactics as well.

By the way, diamonds are still very rare, without X-Ray it will be very difficult to find them with any tactic.

Finding diamonds is not difficult. You just have to go into a cave and go up to about level 10. In a mine at level 5 you can even find a diamond per second.
There are different possibilities. Personally, I usually go to level 11 and first build a room with ovens, workbenches and maybe a bit of food. Usually also a warehouse. Then I build myself a 3 blocks long corridor and then I build small corridors on the side walls that are only 10 blocks or so long. Then I leave two blocks free and then the next tunnel comes. So you don't overlook anything and farm effectively. But I would definitely take a good pickaxe with at least luck and repair to farm diamonds.
