My friend and I have had a Contabo V-Server (VPS L SSD) for a long time.
The server has:
30 Gb Ram
8core CPU with probably 2.2 Ghz
800Gb SSD
Linux Debian 10
Now to my question: How many players would I get on the server if it shouldn't be too blatant. The game version is said to be Paper-1.12.2. We then wanted to play a survival project. Maybe on such an Earth Map, or it should already be a very large map such as 10,000 x 10,000 or maybe 20,000 x 20,000, I do not know exactly how much that makes up. What is the maximum number of players that could play on such a server at the same time? Or like to write me how I could do better.
First of all, a V-Server is generally not suitable for Minecraft if it is to run 100% lag-free, no matter how many players you have on it.
So get used to the fact that it will lie with some players from 10 players.
Almost the same server as you and very good experience in terms of performance.
With the size you have in mind, the Minecraft server should have at least half of the total RAM, i.e. 15 GB. Then it will run reasonably smoothly.
Debian is not really suitable for Minecraft, Centos is much more stable there. But it's a matter of taste.
Start your project and increase if necessary. As I said, a V-Server can always be used with limitations. It's just a question.

The CPU is completely in order, what just doesn't fit with a lot of players is the fact that you share a root server with many others in a V-server. The overall performance can be so good, if another server is messed up or pulls a lot of power, the others are left behind. With a root server, everything belongs to you alone, but the knowledge of server handling and protection is your responsibility and no support that helps. All advantages and disadvantages.
Before you think about renting a root server, check your own knowledge in server administration. Otherwise everything will go completely wrong and you will not enjoy the whole thing.
