I bought Minecraft Java many, many years ago and when the Windows 10 version came out it was free for those who already had Java. But now I can no longer find where I can download it for myself for free.
Did they reverse that?
As far as I know it was free because windows 10 was released, but now it costs money again.
Because that was a promotion for the Windows 10 version… Time is up and let's be honest, nobody who has the Java version needs the Bedrock version, which is worse in so many aspects.
Just wanted to compare how the performance is
I've already compared it… Bedrock is more CPU-heavy but apart from that it takes nothing. The world generation is smoother… But with fabric and the Sodium Mod I can do it easily in the Java version and things like that are only available in the Java version.
Since 2018 you have not received a Win10 Edition key with the Java Edition, since April 2020 you can no longer redeem the keys that you got back then, if you still had one.
In short: the offer is no longer available.
Why did you still want to know:
They wanted to get users to update their operating system from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10. Minecraft belongs to Microsoft after all. A free key for the "new Minecraft" was of course very tempting for many.
They wanted the newly developed Minecraft version "Minecraft Bedrock Edition" to gain gamers and popularity, even among PC gamers.
Over time the hype got weaker and weaker, at some point it was a waste of money to give the Win10 edition key for free. Because almost everyone has had Windows 10 as their operating system since 2018.
