Minecraft mod server?

I set up a Minecraft mod server on an old computer (converted to Linux as a server). He works very well and is laggfrei. Now for my question / problem.

If friends want to join the server they have to have the same mods installed as the server. Is there a way that Vanilla clients can join a mod server and still use all the blocks and vehicles added by the mod?

I hope you can follow my question and answer it.
