or do you actually need it
Theoretically with modpacks but Forge is easier
e.g. 1.8. Forge download
1.8. Open (normal)
afterwards 1.8. Then simply open (forge) and press the Windows key
Enter% Appdata% then go into .mincraft folder and then you have the mods folder
Forge is an indispensable part of practically all mods, at least those that bring in "new" content, such as new blocks, new monsters or the like.
If you want to play with mods, you can't avoid it.
It works with numerous apps or other sites

In theory, mods could run without Forge or Fabric, Optifine is an example. In practice, however, it is easier for modders to rely on a modloader such as Forge or Fabric to save themselves the work.
So if you want a lot of mods, good mods, new content, then you can't avoid a modloader. Forge is and will remain the simplest solution.
