Play Minecraft on Ps3 not working?

So I want to play Minecraft on Ps3 with my sister, but somehow it doesn't work. If we connect the 2nd controller and press start when we're in game it doesn't work. No button works except the Ps button. We're also not shown whether a second player should be added. We play on an HD TV but offline because we have no Wi-Fi. Does anyone have ideas how to play together now?
