Does the end portal in Minecraft also work without lava in the middle?

I wanted to ask if the end portal still works even though there's no lava in the middle. I just tipped water over it by choice and now everything is obsidian. If the portal really doesn't work without lava, I can simply mine the obsidian and add new lava. It would be very nice if someone could help me, I haven't been playing Minecraft that long and I'm a little desperate about it right now. I'll play bedrock if that's anything important.

The portal simply needs the ender portal blocks in the array, nothing more, no lava.
