Minecraft: chunks / blocks and skins don't load?

I wanted to play Minecraft again. I then went to a server and somehow neither my skin nor anyone else loaded it. So everyone had a Steve or Alex skin instead. And besides, no chunks or blocks were loaded. So all I saw was the emptiness.

The first thing I tried was that I first dismantled a block. That worked and other blocks around it were also loaded, but other blocks further outside were not loaded and after a while the loaded blocks "disappear" again and then I only see the emptiness. And the block that I wanted to "dismantle" but was put back in by the "security system" was back, but it was invisible and I could see the block underneath.

However, everything here did not happen in single player mode. Everything went perfectly.
