Minecraft NEI item search?

I downloaded Minecraft NEI (not enough items) and I also know that if you double-click on the search bar, you will see an item stand out. Unfortunately I can't do that, or if I double-click it, nothing happens. Mods version is 1.8.9. Does anyone have an idea what I can do?
