Minecraft crossplay without PS +?

A friend of mine rented a Minecraft server (on the pc). How can I join this server? I don't see him and I can't join. Is crossplay only possible if every player on the PS also has the Playstation Plus subscription? Then it would be practically pointless to rent a server.
