Buy a company server in 2020 used or new? Which hardware? Purchase advice?

I need a server for my company. I hope you can help me a little.

The following should run about it:

-MySQL (JTL Wawi) with only 1-2 users accessing it in parallel (database size under 2GB)

-Simple webshop (JTL Shop) with approx. 100 inquiries / hour (less than 5GB size)

-2 mail servers with 10GB mailboxes each

-Accounting software (Lexware, network version)

-Data storage 200GB

-And if possible a Minecraft server (but is not so important, would be for my little cousin, who would be happy)

(Everything in RAID1, i.e. At least 2x500GB on Windows Server)

Now I would like to try to keep the costs low and came across the site Servershop24, which sometimes offers quite cheap used servers. What about the Dell Poweredge on the side up to about 650 euro? Which one could you recommend here?

I'm a little worried about the electricity costs, unfortunately there are no idle information here…

Are my worries justified?

Renting in the data center is also an option.

Idle consumption by such older dual-socket Xeons is already damn high

How about self-construction, e.g. Like this?

Why not rent, in the data center…

Make some experience first - there's no electricity (additional) and nothing extra to get a gigabit connection.

Windows can also be installed anywhere, but you don't need Windows for your applications.

Except for Lexware, which I don't know, everything works much better on Linux.

In addition, a server is noisy, so you need a locked room, otherwise it will disturb you…

My Poweredge R610 needs approx. 200 W when idling…

This results in monthly costs of around 55 euro…

For this you already get a decent dedicated server in the data center…

The reason why the server is with me is that it doesn't always run and therefore doesn't always generate costs…

If you are interested, I still have a Poweredge 2950 standing around that would be "cheap" to sell - 2x X5680, 32 GB RAM, 2 power supplies, SAS hard drives, the size of which I don't know right now, but are in RAID…

Thanks for your answer, yes I thought so. Do-it-yourself would be an option, I used to assemble a few PCs sxhonmal👍🏼 Unfortunately, I just can't estimate how strong the CPU would have to be for my project. I don't want to oversize the whole thing in order to save electricity.

So what do you think my processor should bring with it so that it runs well with the above purpose, i.e. Is not fully utilized. After all, you want to have a little growth potential.

And how important do you think ECC is here? With regard to the processor and the RAM, you could save a lot here if you did without them. However, it is also problematic to run my MySQL without ECC, right?

Ha

The 4650G should be enough for the beginning, upgrading later would not be a problem, you can pack up to a 16 core on the board

ECC is probably a good idea for MySQL, a total of 32GB would be fine too

2x this RAM should work with the B550 board and the 4650G
