I've tried this a number of times but it doesn't work. My system was only shot afterwards.
Who knows Linux?
I use Linux Mint 19 mate
I got the Minecraftdata (.deb) from minecraft.net
There's a PPA for Ubuntu and Linux Mint: Enter the following in the terminal:
sudo add-apt repository ppa: flexiondotorg / minecraft
sudo apt update -y
sudo apt install minecraft-installer -y
It is also checked whether Java is installed. If not, it will be installed as a dependency.
Of course you can. Minecraft runs on Java, and Java runs on Linux without any problems. The only difficulty could be the 3D drivers (but that has nothing to do with Minecraft or Java).
What exactly happens when you try to install the MC Launcher?
I've tried this a number of times but it doesn't work. My system was only shot afterwards.
I can't do much with it
There are always mistakes
3D drivers?
Which?
This command is complete nonsense!
It would be better to first install Java via Terminal and then download Minecraft directly from Minecraft.net.
Which mistake? What is written there?
That the file system and cache have been corrupted, that certain files are in the wrong format, or that the download fails
Well Minecraft is 3D. The graphics card needs a device driver.
Uh but not for linux?
Just say graphics drivers, then everyone understands it
Yes, for Nvidia and AMD there are of course graphics drivers under Linux, both open source and proprietary, although Nvidia open source drivers are still very bad, they are better at AMD than the proprietary drivers, at least in gaming
Oh no, you used too many heavy words…
Um and where do you get them from?
What kind of hardware do you have?
Somewhat older nvidia geforce graphics card
No idea what you're doing with your system, just installing Minecraft usually can't
Which one exactly?
What worked (before I had scrapped the filesystem) was Minecraft starting with minecraft.jar… But that only worked with old versions and if I wanted to remove a block there was a mesa graphic error
Geforce4 ti 4200
The installation failed and then everything disassembled…
The graphics card is far too old, it doesn't even support OpenGL 3.x, you will only be able to play ancient Minecraft versions with the graphics card
Yes and where are the drivers for linux?
I had my problems with downloading Minecraft directly from Minecraft.net. It was a little while ago, but the Minecraft.net installer wanted to have a JRE 9, but I already had a more current one on my system and the installer didn't tolerate it.
I then solved it by installing Minecraft as a direct Linux version using Lutris. Then there were no problems.
Small update:
I just tried it. My Minecraft didn't want anymore either. I did a reinstall via normal package management and installed the regular launcher: everything is fine, world is there, everything works.
With Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia (Cinnamon).
