They can't be removed, but these 2 commands will help you:
/ worldborder center 0 0

If you create a new world there's a button with "world type" or something like that above it. Just click on it there and then select infinite.
Unfortunately, retrospectively no longer works… Except maybe with mods but I'm not sure.
