Giant cobblestone towers?

Hi, why do all the Youtubers and Twitch streamers always build huge rubble towers in their Minecraft worlds? What are they good for? You can also simply use a locator map for orientation?

These locate maps are expensive to craft and cobble is mostly available but kp whether that is really the reason
