Minecraft server where to host? - 1

I want to build a Minecraft server with 5 friends. We have already tested what, in my opinion, are the best two free server hosts, which were minehut and aternos, but we had to deal with frequent lags and server "stops" on both hosts.

Sometimes you were in a fight with a zombie, the server just stopped for ten seconds and then you were just dead and the XP was gone. Or you are walking a long distance and are bent back about 20 blocks out of nowhere, sometimes several times in a row. The whole thing happened at least once a minute.

I would be satisfied with the following criteria:

- NO subscription, only for example one-time 5-7 euro

-Completely without lags / dropouts / other disturbing

-Plugins possible (i.e. PaperSpigot Server)

-Possibility to import a world onto the server and continue playing as if nothing had happened

-Multiple slots, at least 3

- Do not wait longer than 3 minutes when starting the server

I have already read through old questions, but they were 10 years old and I wanted something current. Nitrado has already been recommended to me, but I would like to receive testimonials because I don't want to just spend my money.

Can someone help me decide?

Thanks for reading through and I hope your answers will be helpful!

I host my servers at G-Portal.

This can also be set so that it is not automatically renewed or only the credit is used and nothing is automatically debited from the account.

I'm very satisfied with them, even if the web interface is a little less useful than Nitrado.
But I know my way around a little better, and I know where I can set these things and I don't need all the functions in the web interface.

But this January I will move my server to a Raspberry Pi to save a little more on costs. With 4GB of RAM it works very well too.

kn

What is "Raspberry Pi"? Is that also recommended? And how many GB of RAM would you need with 6 players in order to have no lags?

Th

So you don't get a server for a one-off 5-7 euro. You can't avoid renting a server or hosting it yourself. You are now wondering why you can't buy a one-time server, here's the answer: A server is nothing more than a "PC" (Linux, Windows, etc. It will run 24 hours a day, 7 days without interruption, that means you rent one PC that runs continuously. But if you don't feel like putting in any money, try hosting yourself. You just have the PC with the best specs and the person with the best internet. There are enough tutorials on YT for you to watch.
I myself host an MC server on a Raspberry Pi (mini PC for 50 euro) for pure Minecraft Vanilla it is sufficient.

La

Raspberry Pi is a small single-board computer which usually Connected to the Internet at a person's home.

That should be for advanced users…

- NO subscription, only for example one-time 5-7 euro

Gives servers that you can pay monthly for the price. Unique not for the price.

-Completely without lags / dropouts / other disturbing

That doesn't exist. That can always happen and is due to different things that a host can't always influence. An automatic warehouse with 1000 hoppers is enough and the server suffers noticeably.

- Do not wait longer than 3 minutes when starting the server

Nobody can promise that either. A vanilla server with a new map starts faster a server with 40 plugins and a 2tb map.

Go to Nitrado, you will get your criteria as good as met.

So, purely arithmetically…

a Pi needs about 2-3 A and 5 V → results in 15 watts…

15 W x 24 h = 360 Wh per day.

360 Wh x 356 days = 131,400 Wh per year

131,400 Wh / 1000 = 131.4 kWh per year

131.4 kWh * 30 cents = 39.42 euro per year

39.42 euro / 12 = 3.29 euro per month

so your Raspi server costs you 3.29 euro a month in electricity…

You can now add the hardware proportionately, so you might get 5 euro per month

For 5 euro a month you get 5 slots at Nitrado and don't have to worry about anything.

hmm, so I would recommend a hoster instead of hosting yourself - at least with Minecraft…

kn

All right, actually thought that servers could be bought once. I didn't even know that they were online 24/7, I thought you always had to let them start.

The thing is, we just want to play pure Minecraft Vanilla with a single plugin, DiscordSRV, so I can enter commands through Discord. Without big redstone projects or anything else: everyone has their own wooden house and may dismantle larger things at height 11, nothing else.

I've heard of Nitrado many times before, have you had any experience with it? Because from some users you also hear that the prices are quoted there. Are "utopian".

kn

All right, that wouldn't be for a casual gamer. At least I think so. ^^

How much GB of RAM would you need for 5 players if you were to play with millions of hoppers and clocks without plugins / mods or larger Redstone projects in order to have it hosted lag-free?

And why G-Portal instead of Nitrado?

kn

The thing is that everyone would like to have the opportunity to start the server themselves and I'm as good as the only one who knows a little about Minecraft and computers. 2 out of 5 people play on a laptop at around 30fps.

Otherwise I would host it myself, I have a PC (1050Ti, Ryzen5 2600, 970 EVO).

So my two concerns would actually be whether 1. It affects my own computer performance and whether 2. The server would then run smoothly. As already said in the other comments, without Redstone projects, mods, plugins etc.

La

2GB should be enough for Vanilla.

I think G-Portal is a little cheaper. Have never exactly compared xD

Sn

I've been with Nitrado for years, there were problems exactly once because of defective hardware. The support took care of it immediately and pushed my server to new hardware, the whole thing didn't take an hour.

I host modpacks with well over 200 mods and have no real problems there on the server side. I pay 11 euro / month for 6gb Ram, but you certainly don't need that for a vanilla project with a plugin.

kn

OK. I once checked the internet, with Nitrado you pay 7 euro a month with 2GB RAM and 6 player slots. That's a little too much. I was just looking around and came across PebbleHost. It has 4.4 stars at Trustpilot and you pay 3 euro a month for 3 GB of RAM. Have you heard of this before?

kn

Have a look, 16.20 euro for 90 days with 5 player slots is actually quite okay, but it's only 1280MB of RAM and I think that's a little bit low given the price. Have you heard of PebbleHost? Have already asked in another comment, should be cheaper.

Sn

I tried another host once, but can't remember which one, wasn't enthusiastic and went back to Nitrado.

Give it a try. My PC had worse specs than yours and everything worked
