I don't know my way around at all. I heard there's Java Minecraft, is there anything else and what's the best?
There's a version in the MS Store, but this is more or less the PE version of the cell phone for the PC.
The best way to get the Java Edition is from the Minecraft website.
There's Minecraft Java and Minecraft Bedrock.
If you want to play with mods use the Java version.
If you want to play with other platforms, take the Bedrock version.
No - there's still Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for consoles, mobile phones (Pocket Edition, Minecraft Earth) and PC (Windows 10 Edition). There's also Minecraft Dungeons, Minecraft's story mode!
/ edit: In my opinion, the Java Edition is the best version of the game.

If you have to decide and play on the PC / laptop: take Java
So there's Bedrock Edition (all consoles that are up to date, mobile phones, Windows 10 from the store)
and Java Editon for PC
Without complicated things, the two versions can't crossplay. In my opinion, you can do most of the Java Editon with all sorts of modifications etc.
