I want to play Minecraft with my friend and wanted to ask if you can play together for free?

Legal free servers can be hosted on Aternos. But they are not intended for massive numbers of players and 100+ modpacks. For 5-6 people without plugins it should be enough.

Yes you can, as long as you are not in the same WLAN you need a server.

Either you put one on yourself. Then you have to release ports in your Internet or you do it through Hamachi. (Just google it).

The much simpler method is to host a server with a provider.
For this I can recommend https://server.pro/ or https://aternos.org/...s.org/:de/ as a private hoster.

If you have about 4 euro left for the cheapest server per month, you benefit from the fact that you don't have to start the server every time someone wants to play and better performance.

If you want to drag plugins onto your server, you need the "Minecraft Bukkit / Spigot" offer. If not, you can either use that or "Minecraft (Vanilla)."

The most important rule on servers with friends: switch on a whitelist and don't give OP to anyone you don't know.
If you activate a whitelist, only players you have added can play on your server.
With OP rights you can do almost anything, i.e. Destroy (grief) the entire server and much more. Then there's only the console over it.
