Minecraft Pocket Edition not a multiplayer?

I wanted to start Minecraft again after a long time. So I grabbed a friend so I wouldn't play alone. Problem: we both own the purchased Minecraft PE Edition, have updated it to the latest version, are friends via Microsoft in the same Wi-Fi network and can and yet can't join each other.

How can you solve this?

Which iOS versions do you have? Both of you log out of Microsoft, restart the router, Bluetooth on / off and restart Minecraft then it should work
